There is a beautiful woodland walk right on the doorstep of The Cottage; go to the top of the pathway and turn left, go through the gate (please close behind you) from where you can walk through The Vale. (Warning – it can get a bit muddy! Mud Daddy for paws and boots is in the log shed!)
If you walk right through The Vale for about half an hour, you will reach Hartland Abbey (or it is a 5 minute drive away). Even if you have a dog and cannot go inside the building, it is definitely worth visiting just for the grounds. The gardens are vast with numerous different areas; there are unique black sheep, and there is a mile long walk to the private beach (rocks, not sand, but definitely worth visiting!) which has the most spectacular views.
Nobody wants bad weather when they are on holiday but, if you do experience a windy or stormy day, the place to go is Hartland Quay. The force of nature as the sea crashes against the zig-zag rock formations that are unique to Hartland is a spectacular sight to behold. Equally beautiful on a sunny day, the Quay has a hotel and bar where you can have a meal or just a drink, inside or out. There is also a small museum which is open in peak season.
From the Quay, it is a 25 minute walk to Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall; you will need sturdy footwear as the ground is uneven but it is definitely worth the effort!
Docton Mill is another local gem (about 1 hour walk or 10 minute drive away from The Cottage) with beautiful gardens that have interest throughout the seasons and a very peaceful and relaxing river walk. And they serve award winning cream teas!
